Paweł Ksawery Brzostowski

Head priest of Rukainiai parish (1739-1827), who between Jašiūnai and Turgeliai established the Paulava Republic. His Republic did not have any predecessor in Central Europe. There, the serfs were released from serfdom; after the Mass in Turgeliai church, the citizens came to the Manor to hear lectures about agriculture and hygiene. After settling in Rukainiai, Brzostowski acted as a patron, philanthropist, founder of churches and printed his own writings. Paweł Ksawery Brzostowski died in 1827 and was buried there.
