On Palm Sunday, all of believers go to church to have their palms consecrated. Vilnius region palms are woven from dry herbs – common windgrass, smooth brome, calmagrostis epigejos, common reed, yarrows, St John’s worth, cultural and feed timothies and other herbs. They are woven in accordance to various techniques transferred from generation to generation. Palms made in a roller-form demand most patience when weaving; they’ve been named “Ruszczycówki” in honoring the Polish painter Ferdynand Ruszczyc. In Vilnius region, also flat, garland, switch or figure-type palms are woven. On Palm Sunday, the oldest traditional palms made from willow, birch, osier or juniper branches decorated with Spring flowers are also taken to the church. Consecrated palms all year long were stored in the holy corner, wherein the portraits of saints were decorated with consecrated palms.
