In the culture of Balts, barrows and hillforts had an important place. Barrow – a poured mountain; the burial place of ancient Balts. Barrow complex is called mounds. Barrows existed until 12-13th century; this burial tradition breaks and was never renewed again. Another important part of the Balts culture are hillforts. Hillfort is a hill, on which stood a small castle that defended the surrounding residents. When creating a hillfort, people tried to choose a place, which was as much as possible protected by natural obstacles – steep slopes, bodies of water at the foot. Hillfort consisted of a yard – castle yard and fortifications. Hillforts were constructed until the middle of 15th century.
