The Feast for the Assumption of Virgin Mary

Annually, the Feast for the Assumption of Virgin Mary in Šilėnai gathers the whole village community and residents of surrounding villages. During the Assumption of Mary holiday, the vegetables, fruits and herbs are consecrated. In accordance to the old tradition, the herbs consecrated during the Assumption of Mary had to be preserved and they were put in to a coffin after the death of a person. Traditional honey cakes are sold near the church – made from honey and butter, gingerbread (“piernikai”) – light, glazed baked goods, as well as, candy in a shape of rooster or a squirrel.
